    Dear Valencia

Thank you for your question. Buddha Shakyamuni or previously known as Prince Siddharta Gautama is not the only Buddha. Before him, there were those who became enlightened Buddhas, and after him, there were many practitioners who became enlightened Buddhas. In fact, all sentient beings have the potentials to become enlightened, and that is the main objective of 84,000 teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni – to lead sentient beings towards enlightenment and leave the samsaric existence. Once a being became enlightened, s/he became the perfect object of refuge.

Dorje Shugden is a Buddha and a perfect object of refuge. Dorje Shugden is the emanation of Buddha of Wisdom Manjushri. His previous incarnations are extraordinary high Lamas with great attainments. Is that why when the Buddha Shakyamuni is mentioned, sometimes, he is referred to as the “historical Buddha”? That he is the one known is history? I guess most of us don’t know about the other Buddhas and the real meaning meaning behind the word Buddha.

    Thanks for the clarification.

    Dear Fong

Thank you for your question. The meaning of the word “Buddha” originated from Pali language that means awakened or enlightened.

Although Buddha Shakyamuni is not the only enlightened Buddha, Buddha Shakyamuni has played a significant role since he is the founder of Buddhism, the religion that we now practice. His life story is an inspiration for many who are walking the spiritual path.
